About Border Collies -
History:- Border Collies first came from the borders of Scotland and England where they were used to herd animals mainly sheep. Border Collies were bred to work long hours in all weathers and had to be very active, hardy, fit and quick to learn. Sheep herding dogs originally came in many varieties and the Border Collie has developed from them. Some Border Collies have been bred as show dogs and have pedigrees registered with the Kennel Club. Others have been bred with sheep herding in mind . These dogs can be registered with the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS) and take part in sheep dog trials. It is very unusual for Border Collies to be both Show dogs and sheep dog trial dogs but it has happened. Border Collies unlike other many other breeds come in a wide variety of sizes and colours not just the traditional black and white like Breeze.
Thinking about owning a Border Collie? :- All Borders Collies originally come from working dogs blood lines so you should be aware that if you are thinking about getting a pup that the sweet little puppy you see may soon grow into a demanding active dog. If you do decide to share you life with a Border Collie they can make lovely additions to your family. However make sure you either get your dog from a good breeder or one of the many rescue organisations. A good dog breeder or rescue organisation will interview you to find out if you are a suitable family to look after one of their puppies. If you visit a dog breeder make sure you see the puppy's mother and also find out about the father. Don't rush out and get the first puppy you see, Border Collies can live for 14 years plus, so make sure you choose the one for you very carefully. Also check out this link to the RSPCA for more information on buying a puppy safely www.rspca.org.uk/-buying a puppy
Health issues :- The breed was only registered as a breed by the Kennel Club in 1976 which is quite recent for pedigree dogs so they do not have some of the health problems as other pedigree breeds. However like all dogs they can have problems and a good dog breeder will know the full heath history of the both the parents and any puppies and will have had health checks such as eye and hearing carried out.
